Islamabad: A three-day celebration of Francophone Week, one of the biggest events of the year for French Speaking People, started at National University of Modern Languages (NUML) today.
French Language Department of NUML in collaboration with Embassy of France in Islamabad and Alliance Françoise is holding this three-day Francophone celebration. A very colourful, musical and entertaining ceremony was held to formally inaugurate the celebration which was attended by Ambassador of France in Pakistan, Philippe Thiebaud, Cultural Attaché Frederic Bessat, Rector NUML Maj Gen (R) Masood Hasan, Director General (DG) Brig Azam Jamal, Head of French Department Amina Niazi, Deans, heads, Directors, Faculty member and students of different institutions including Allama Iqbal University, Quaid-e-Azam University and Alliance Françoise.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Ambassador of France in Pakistan, Philippe Thiebaud said that French people and Government believe in dialogue among the civilizations of the world and the French language is a tool to bring all at one platform. Sharing of literature, culture and traditions through language helps us to have a better understanding of each other.
Mr Thiebaud said that French is one of the very few languages spoken all over the world. There are currently over 220 million French speakers worldwide, including 72 million so-called partial French speakers. He further said that this Week of French Speaking is being celebrated by a community of 220 million French speakers on the five continents and they all contribute towards each others economic wellbeing and social development.
Moreover, all French speaking countries are actively participating in the economic and social development of Pakistan. French Embassy and Government are also thankful to NUML for helping to organize this event and efforts of the faculty and staff for disseminating better knowledge of French language and literature are also worth mentioning here, he added.
Speaking at the occasion DG Brig Azam Jamal said that celebrating French week each year shows our belief and commitment for the promotion of international languages and literature of the world. NUML’s Department of French Language has been promoting French language, literature and culture sine long and its students have scored highest marks in DELF and DALF exams of French language and now they are teaching the language in different institutions across country, he added.
Earlier to this, students from different institutions deliver speeches in French language, Saqiba Mishal recited a proem in French language, a French adoption of legendry folk love story of Anaar Kali and Saleem, Mahrukh and Sheesan sang a French song, and student performed a funny skit. Aamir Hussain bagged first position, Aafia Taskeen got 2nd position while Anum Rafique remained third in the French language Speech competition.
In the end Rector Maj Gen (R) Masood Hasan presented souvenir to the French Ambassador Philippe Thiebaud. This event will continue on March 20th and 21st in which French poem, song, and skit competitions will be held and a Cultural Fair also be held on the last day of this event.
