Although Pakistan lacked key players and failed to make a good start in the tournament, they stunned the world by accomplishing the ‘mission impossible’.
Pakistan faced defeat in the hands of West Indies, India and South Africa and beat Zimbabwe, Australia, Sri Lanka and New Zealand in the round matches. But it was the drawn match against England that proved be one factor for Pakistan to proceed to the semifinals, thanks to rain.
The other factor for Pakistan’s progress to the semis was the match between Australia and Sri Lanka. Australia were the next Pakistan for green shirts’ fans as West Indies victory would mean their ouster from the World Cup.
In their semifinal, Pakistan beat New Zealand, the second time in the event.
Pakistan were once again against England in the final. England had the edge of bowling out Pakistan’s whole team on just 74 runs in their group match. But the green shirts put up a great performance in the final, winning their first ever international tournament in the game’s history.
