MEDINA: Twelve people were killed in a fire that broke out in Ishraq Al-Madinah Hotel in Saudi Arabia’s holy city of Medina on Saturday.
More than 130 people, mostly pilgrims, were injured, according to a statement issued by Medina Governorate.
Authorities evacuated the guests and closed off the street leading to the hotel, located on Sitteen Street.
The hotel had 700 guests at the time of the fire.
Helicopters were pressed into service to evacuate the trapped people.
Medina is a major religious tourist destination for Muslims and Islam’s second holiest city after Mecca.
