ISLAMABAD: Director General of Immigration & Passports, Sikandar Sultan Raja, called on Chief Secretary Sindh Mr. Sajjad Saleem Hotiana on Friday, requesting him help vacate the customized/ tailor-made building of Malir Passport Office, presently under the illegal possession of District Administration Malir.
The chief secretary promised to do the needful as it will go a long way in mitigating the sufferings of passport applicants of Malir who travel all the way to Passport office Saddar for the issuance of their passports.
The Director General Passport also ordered an inquiry to fix the responsibility on the passport officials responsible for this slackness. Zonal Head was also directed to make Malir Office functional within one month.
Earlier, he paid a surprise visit to Passport offices of Karachi today and remained in the passport compound for almost four hours without letting any passport official or public know about his identity.
It is pertinent to mention that four passport offices are located at one place in Saddar Karachi due to which there is lot of rush. Approximately 2000 applicants are entertained daily and another 2000 come to collect their passports.
Given the workload, it was decided to establish an independent office for applicants with urgent fee inside the compound to decrease the workload on other offices and to further facilitate the public paying urgent fee.
The DG also visited Passport Office Awami Markaz, which has been set up in two shops, and observed that the place is insufficient to cater for 500-plus applicants on daily basis. There is no seating arrangement in this office. He immediately ordered to search some suitable building to relocate the office. He also inspected two buildings in this regard and said decision in this respect will be taken within one month.
The DG Passport also showed dissatisfaction over the security arrangements and directed to check the entry of irrelevant persons. He also directed to open additional counters in all the offices keeping in view the work load. He gave one month to the Zonal In-charge and responsible officers at Head Office to take above mentioned actions.
