PALLEKELE – Younis Khan and left handed stylish opener, Shan Masood put record 217 runs partnership and set a new record of highest fourth wicket partnership for Pakistan, on Monday.
Younis Khan and Shan Masood put 217 runs together on board and set a new record of highest runs partnership against Sri Lanka during last and third Test match of the three match series.
Earlier, Imran Khan bowled a fabulous spell to take his maiden five-for. He generally bowled in the corridor of uncertainty to trouble the batsmen.
However, Angelo Mathews, with his well-constructed ton seemed to have put them in a position of strength. Masood and Younis though had other ideas.
Pakistan took shaky start and lost its both openers for 13 runs. It was Lakmal again who started to cruise Pakistani opening line-up, when he took his 50th Tests wicket after dismissing Shehzad for none! A good length delivery that just came back in off the seam, Shehzad played down the wrong line, left a gap between bat and pad and it uprooted the off pole. This was the first duck for Shehzad in Tests.
Shan Masood who was dropped for Test series against Bangladesh, proved his selection right and scored a well-crafted, mature ton at the time when Pakistan were two down for just 13 runs, chasing a mammoth target of 377.
Shan Masood is not out on 114 of 198 balls with eleven 4s and only sixer.
He together with Younis Khan put up a record 217 runs stand for fourth wicket. The duo will resume proceedings for the guests tomorrow as Pakistan is still 147 runs away from a historic victory.
