Ramdan 2016 in UK from June 7

LONDON: Ramadan, Muslims’ holy month of fasting has started in United States on June 6, 2016. While, in United Kingdom the first Ramadan will begin from tomorrow (Tuesday) on June 7.

Ramadan is the ninth month in Islamic calendar (lunar Hijri calendar). And Islamic calendar is 10-11 days shorter than Gregorian Calendar In the month of Ramadan Muslims performs religious duties wholly, such as, fasting, praying, alms-giving and self-accountability.

Basically, Islam has Five Pillars of Faith (Testimony, Salah, Fasting, Alms-giving and pilgrimage, the Hajj) and fasting is one of them. For Muslims it’s time for increased religious devotion and self-examination.

The month of Ramadan begins with sighting of the new moon. Muslims prohibit from eating, drinking, saying bad things and intimacy during fasting period. Ramadan is considered the holiest month of Islamic year, as, the Prophet Muhammad received the first revelation in this month, and so the last one.

Muslims are encouraged to recite the Quran cover to cover in this month. They are due to perform five times prayer but in Ramadan they perform a special prayer, known as Tarawih. In Tarawih, they meant to recite the complete Quran in 29 to 30 days of time period (during Ramadan).

In United Stated and United Kingdom, many Muslim organizations amend their opening and closing timings accordingly. Mosques (a place where Muslim pray) are usually cramped than the usual especially during evening prayers.

At the end of the month of Ramadan Muslims celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr, a Islamic festival,  on first Shawwal  (tenth month of Islamic calendar). which is consider as a gift from God to those who fast. The day commence by congregation of Eid-prayer and then people say Eid greeting to each other, and children get money from their elders.
