ISLAMABAD: A recent walkout from the National Assembly session by the opposition parties irked the Prime Minister so much so that he termed the walkout a tactic to seek NRO.
Berating the opposition in the National Assembly, Imran Khan tweeted: “In a Parliament that costs taxpayers billions yearly, yet another walkout in NA by the Opposition shows that this is the only function they intend to perform. These are pressure tactics to seek an NRO and evade accountability for corruption in NAB cases not initiated by PTI.”
The Prime Minister is very right in his assertions that billions of rupees are spent on the functioning of the parliament and its members should focus on their core job of legislation. But Imran Khan’s actions are not meeting his words, as he himself has not attended any session of the house for over four months.
Out of the 34 sessions of the incumbent National Assembly, the PM has attended only six. This shows how the Prime Minister, who is the leader of the house, is disinterested in the business of the Parliament and its core job of legislation.
Before and even after winning the July 25th elections last year, Imran Khan had repeatedly announced to make himself available to the members of parliament to respond their queries.
He had also pledged to introduce ‘Zero-Hour’ for Prime Minister on the pattern of British Parliament, during which he will be bound to be present in the House and respond the members’ queries.
Instead of attending the Parliament’s session and responding the members’ queries on fortnightly basis after coming into power, the Prime Minister has forgotten even the way to the Parliament. However, he did not miss to target the opposition for staging a protest walkout from the house, reminding the opposition of their primary job in a sarcastic tone.
But the Prime Minister perhaps forget he is not only a member of the same house but the leader of the house too and needed to be more serious towards the house business than any other member.
Imran Khan’s track record as a member of the National Assembly has been worst when it comes to attending the sessions. He was one of the worst performing members of the last National Assembly.
