Gas leak sparks evacuations in Queensland

QUEENSLAND, Australia: Properties were evacuated after workers ruptured a gas pipeline in the heart of Maryborough in Queensland.

Authorities have said that the ruptured gas main that prompted police to order evacuations has been repaired.

An excavator had ruptured the pipeline just before 11:30am on Monday, resulting in the declaration of emergency about midday in Kent and Adelaide streets, Lennox, John and Ellena streets, and the car park of a Woolworths supermarket.

Emergency was revoked at about 3:00 pm.

However, evacuations have been ordered as a precaution and an exclusion zone has been put in place.

Australian Pipeline Ltd said the gas main was being monitored and was safe.

“APA Group crews are on site and repairs are in progress,” their official statement read.

The company also suggested that a small number of customers may experience disruption to their gas supply during the repairs.
